May 2026 Tip of the Month
For ABOG 2026 Qualifying Exam Candidates
As you wrap up residency, your time is limited—and how you use it matters.
Focus your strategy:
● You likely won’t cover everything—and that’s okay
● Prioritize high-yield topics first
● Use the Test Topics Manual to guide what matters most
● Review your study plan weekly and start phasing out low-yield topics
● Aim to:
○ May–June: Complete your full review
○ July: Reinforce strengths
How to study effectively:
● After each topic → practice written questions immediately
● Use our Written Question Manuals (WQMs):
○ 1,450+ questions by topic
○ Detailed explanations + references
○ Available in online
● Once your review is complete:
○ Use Q Banks for mixed-topic practice
○ Take the Practice Test (250 questions, 4 hours) to simulate exam conditions
Test-Taking Tip: Most missed questions? The ones you spend the most time on.
Your strategy:
1. Answer easy questions first (don’t overthink them)
2. If unsure after ~30 seconds → flag and move on
3. Come back in this order:
○ Questions you can figure out with a little time
○ Harder ones that need more effort
○ Total guesses
For guesses:
● Use the same letter every time (A, B, C, or D — avoid E)
● This improves your odds statistically
For ABOG 2026 Certifying Exam Candidates
You have about 3 months left before submission—now is the time to finalize your case list.
What to focus on now:
● Review all OB/GYN cases
● Select at least 75%–100% of office patients
● Complete all 40 categories by end of June
Important resources:
● Virtual Case List Workshop
June 7, 2026 with Dr. Krishna Das
● Comprehensive Case List Review (ABC Faculty):
○ Case-by-case feedback
○ First come, first served (fills quickly after mid-June)
Also: Plan ahead
● Register for:
○ Hybrid Board Review Course (Aug 11-16) – Asheville or Webex
Case List Tip
Formatting can make or break your case list.
● Use formatting to guide the examiner’s attention
● Your goal: walk into the exam already positioned to pass
● Submit early (by end of May/early June) for review
For Subspecialist Candidates (2026 ABOG General Certifying Exam)
If you’re collecting cases retrospectively:
Keep it simple:
● Stick to cases you know well
● Focus on high-yield, core cases
● Avoid rare/complex cases you can’t confidently defend
Support resources:
● Hybrid Board Review Course (Aug 11–16)
● Virtual Case List Workshop (June 7)
● Interactive Oral Board Review (Oct 13-18)
● Case List Review (submit early—high demand)
Case List Tip
● Your general OB/GYN knowledge matters most
● Use your “off-subject” cases wisely:
○ Include 20 well-rounded cases from your chief resident cases
○ Show breadth + depth of care
Aim to use as many categories as possible
For Chief Residents Planning a Subspecialty Fellowship
Start collecting cases now while access is easy.
What to do:
● Collect at least 30 cases → choose your best 20 later
● Keep full documentation:
○ GYN: H&P, operative notes, pathology, discharge summaries
○ OB: Prenatal forms, delivery notes, postpartum notes
Avoid rare/“one-off” cases—they’re harder to defend later
If a junior resident couldn’t explain the case easily, don’t use it.
Quick Tip:
You’re currently at your peak general OB/GYN knowledge. If you don’t use it—you lose it.
● Focus on “bread & butter” cases now
● Consider applying for the accelerated track after passing the written boards
